A synthetic porous ceramic carrier(SPC) was made for the immobilization of microorganisms in a bioreactor Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) showed that SPC carrier was composed of many pores with diameters of 5 mum or greater. synthetic wastewater(250 mg/L) was treated in a packed-bed reactor where 61 percent of the volume was filled with the SPC carrier. In order to confirm the feasibility of SPC carrier as a biofilter, kaolin(30 mg/L.) as suspended solids(SS) was added to wastewater. At HRT of 3 h, the effluent TOC concentration and the removal efficiency were 23.0 mg/L. and 90.7 percent, respectively, and the effluent SS concentration was 8.7 mg/L with 70.8 percent of SS removal efficiency.
