The Cherenkov laser is a potential high-power and tunable source of short millimeter or submillimeter waves. Because of its excellent features of broad frequency tunability, high power-handling capability, high efficiency, and wide bandwidth, the Cherenkov laser has a promising future in the fields of high-resolution radars, remote sensing, measurement and modification of the atmosphere, and so forth. In recent years, a great deal of experimental (1), (2) and theoretical (3)-(9) work has been done on the Cherenkov free-electron laser at millimeter or submillimeter wavelengths.
