Liquefaction of a sub-bituminous A coal in H-donor and non- donor solvents

A subbiluminous-A coal has been liquefied in non-donor and H-donor solvents, without catalyst, with red mud and with CoZnMo/Al_2O_3, at 425°C and 17 MPa. The liquefaction products were fractioned into preasphaltenes, asphaltenes and oils with THF, toluene and pentane. The H-donor capacity is not an essential feature for a liquefaction solvent. Non-donors (anthracene, phenantrene) can be as effective as H-donors (tetralin, 9,10-DHA) if the appropriate conditions and catalysts are used.
