For efficient operation, electric power generation facilities need to have accurate and stable temperature measurements in such diverse areas as feed-water heaters, superheated steam lines, and fireboxes in coal fired boilers. The effect of temperature measurement errors or uncertainties depends on the direction of the error. High readings lead to reduced thermodynamic efficiency, increased fuel costs, and increased emissions in fossil fuel plants. Low readings lead to a loss of component life, increased maintenance costs, and reduced plant availability.
