BENDING STRESS IN THE CATT CYLINDRICAL GEAR TOOTH AT THE TOOTH FILLET

In this paper, the strain gauge method is used to determine the values of bending stresses in the circular arc V tooth trace (CATT) cylindrical gear along the tooth length at the root fillet. The experimental results show that for the concave tooth, the maximum bending stress increases gradually from the middle cross section (the middle of the tooth length) to the two ends of the tooth length, and the critical cross sections are located at the two ends of the tooth length as the load is applied on the top of the concave tooth. For the convex tooth, the variation of maximum bending stress along the tooth length is, however, opposite to that for the concave tooth, and the critical cross section is located at the middle cross section as the load is applied on the top of the convex tooth. These results are in good agreement with the authors' earlier theoretical predictions.
