Continued efforts to improve the performance of electroanalytical techniques using solid state electrodes has led to the development of a novel hydrodynamic voltammetric measurement system. Investigations of the hydrodynamic modulation process at a vibrating inlaid disc platinum microelectrode sensor has shown that an asymmetric flow pattern results in over modulation of the ac current component which occurs at the vibrating frequency. As a consequence the current component at the frequency of vibration experiences distortion and phase reversal which makes established ac phase sensitive detection methods unsuitable. A novel rms measurement strategy has been developed which takes full advantage of the hydrodynamic conditions at a disc microelectrode to enhance the voltammetric response.
