A DESIGN TOOL BASED ON INTEGRAL ATTACHMENT STRATEGY CASE STUDIES

In designing integral attachments, more commonly known as snapfits, there are many guides to aid designers in feature level design, such as sizing equations for cantilever hooks. However, there is no source of generalized arrangement strategies of these features, except for existing products. In this paper, a number of existing attachment strategies were examined and systematically catalogued. From this research, general guidelines were produced, and improvements were outlined for individual designs. The work was then compiled into an interactive, hypertext design guide to allow designers easy access to this information. Several different paths to the information are implemented, allowing for both application specific and more general morphological searches of the catalog to be performed.
