Current technical developments of planar lightwave circuits and planar integrated micro-lenses have made their practical applications possible. The applications are optical 1XN splitters for access network systems, optical coupling devices for parallel interconnection systems, or liquid crystal panels for projection display systems. This paper reviews fabrication techniques, mainly ion-exchange techniques, and applications of them, and discusses the potential of these planar integrated micro-optical glasses.
