As a result of the Clean Air Act and other legislation from State and Local Air Quality Management Districts. NO_x emissions have become more restrictive. This tightening of NO_x restrictions has presented petroleum refineries and cogeneration operators with opportunities and challenges. The opportunity has been of stimulate the development of and testing of new and innovative ways to reduce the emission of NO_x from combustion sources. The challenge is to incorporate the new and innovative developments into an operable, maintainable, least cost technology mix. The burner manufacurers have resonded to the challenge and developed unique new burners which greatly reduce NO_x. However, in some cases, the burners cannot acheive the required reductions and one has to look for alternative technologies such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.
