Signalling support for multimedia communications in ATM networks (keynote paper)

While the work of ITU-T SG 11 and the ATM-Forum in 1993 has provided an initial set of B-ISDN signalling protocols, the standardisation activities for B-ISDN signalling in 1994 is focused on the enhancements needed to support distributed multimedia applications. ITU-T SG 11 and ATM-Forum currently specify a "Capability set 2" (or "Phase 2") of B-ISDN signalling which will support multiconnection calls, dynamic adding and dropping of parties and connections, and several other functions for multimedia services, e.g. traffic negotiation procedures.Focusing on signalling protocols at the access to B-ISDN, this paper shows1. which additional functions will be standardised for B-ISDN signalling in 1994(/1995);2. the way multimedia communications can take advantage of the new network facilities; 3. possible further extensions of the current signalling protocols beyond Capability set 2 / Phase 2, and new applications derived from it, like multimedia teleparticipation and network support for multimedia conferencing.
