Over the past 3 years, Volkswagen has laid the foundation stone for the global success of small spark ignition engines with outstanding low-end torque and low consumption, in the form of the 1.4l 125 kW TSI with its combination of twin turbocharging and direct injection. Now, with the 1.4l 90 kW TSI engine that was launched last year, the company has achieved a superb breakthrough for TSI technology in the medium power range as well. Frugality and in-gear acceleration remain the success factors even given the tense issue of CO_2 emissions, or indeed precisely because of it. As a result, Volkswagen has been consistently expanding its TSI strategy and is building on the success story with the new 1.2l TSI engine with a power of 77 kW in the area of mass production engines for the Polo and Golf classes. The further development of engine technology for the small yet powerful EA111 engine series is based on consistent friction force optimisation and lightweight construction. The engine with a new aluminium crankcase for optimum weight and a completely newly developed combustion process represents the ideal combination of performance, consumption and costs for volume motorisation from Volkswagen.
