New Mercedes-Benz V6 Sports Engine - The Sporty Way to Save Fuel

The V6 gasoline engine (internal type designation M272) has been built at Mercedes-Benz for series production vehicles since the spring of 2004. The engine is installed in all Mercedes-Benz car model series with standard and all-wheel drive without any technical modifications required. For the SL and SLK roadsters, the 3.5 L V6 engine was modified to accentuate the sporty character of these vehicles in just 21 months as part of a model refinement package. The goals here included combining sports car performance through a high rpm range, dramatically increasing rated power output, designing a sporty sound for the engine, and making the engine considerably more fuel-efficient. To fulfill these criteria, the chain drive and valve train were altered and the gas-exchange cycle and the combustion were completely redesigned. This led to a major increase in combustion chamber turbulence while maintaining good cylinder charge values. Together with improved fuel-air mixture formation and an increased compression ratio, it was possible to improve both engine performance and efficiency. The result is a six-cylinder sports engine that not only has a higher power output and an exceptional dynamic response, but also demonstrates substantially better fuel economy in the partial load range with unchanged fuel requirements (RON 95).
