SAFETY AND ARM UNITS (SAU) USING PYROTECHNIC DEVICES AS ‘SLAPPER’ HIGH ENERGY INITIATOR - UTILISATION FOR THE INITIATION OF PYROTECHNIC DEVICES FOR MISSILES (MOTOR AND WARHEAD)

Safety and Arm Units (SAU) using pyrotechnic devices as "slapper" are interesting tofulfil ignition sequences of motors and warheads in a missile. Actually safetyrequirements for motor ignition are becoming close to safety requirements forwarhead initiation.Low and medium energy level electrical igniters will have a limited utilisation inpyrotechnic trains designed without a physical barrier after the ignition.The slapper doesn't require this pyrotechnic train interruption due to it's own safetycharacteristics. These characteristics make this system very attractive for ignitionsequences of modern missiles.The Electronic safe and Arm Device (ESAD) solution, based on an ‘in line'pyrotechnic train using slapper-detonator or slapper-igniter, is a modern way ofcombining high levels of safety, high density components packaging, as well as,simple design and test ability by the use of electronic functions.
