摘要

Lithoid material is a general definition to indicate a wide category of ornamental materials: they can be divided into natural (i.e. granite) or artificial (i.e. conglomerates and ceramics). The aim of this paper is to study and develop definite improvements in the field of metal binder based diamond tools for surface finishing of lithoid materials. The focus is not on the metal binder properties, but on the optimisation of diamond bits peculiarities. The use of coated diamond bits to be embedded in commonly used metal binder matrix based on Fe-alloys and steel, has been studied. The coating of diamond grains is not devoted to enhance the hardness properties but to improve the interface adhesion with the embedding matrix and, especially, to shield the diamond itself from the degradation mechanisms, usually encountered with the production of diamond tools based on Fe alloys.
