This paper describes an active mass damper (AMD) for damping the gust response of concrete cable-stayed bridges during cantilever construction. Very low frequency veritical vibration of the deck is dominant in this case. Since this vibration significantly affects the working ability and the structural safety, damping is required to control these vibrations. It was considered that the passive damping devices are not efficient for damping of the low frequency vertical vibration. Thus, an AMD based on the optimal regulator theory was developed. This AMD was applied to the Ikara Bridge and field experiments were carried out to determine the damping efect. The effectiveness of the AMD was verified.
