Study and Practice on Improvement of Pavement Smoothness on Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway (Jiangsu Section)

Pavement smoothness is an essential index to ensure the high speed and driving safety on expressway. During the construction of Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway in Jiangsu Section, different factors influencing the pavement smoothness have been studied systematically. Based on the premise of insuring the comprehensive quality, a series of measures have been taken to raise the pavement smoothness to a high level. Estimated by Highway Engineering Quality Monitoring Center of the Ministry of Communications, the average evenness in the whole line achieved an International Roughness Index (IRI) of 1.61 mm/m and standard deviation of 0.71mm. Experts evaluated that this expressway has reached the highest level of pavement smoothness in China, and attained the international level. This paper discusses comprehensively how to improve the pavement smoothness level of Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway in Jiangsu Section.
