The authors have contributed to the development of a unique display system architecture that overcomes some of the intrinsic limitations of the scanned beam and 2D panel architectures. Leveraging the unique properties of the grating light valve (GLV) technology, the scanned linear GLV architecture combines the best features of the scanned beam and the 2-D panel systems. The scanned linear GLV architecture uses a linear array of physical pixels oriented (in this example) along a vertical column of image data. Once per image frame, this linear array is optically scanned across the screen to produce a complete image.
