Wireless access for fixed services in developing countries: A case study

The conclusion is that fixed cellular is an attractive solution, compared to wireline. It brings good revenue streams, it is cheaper to deploy and operate, and it permits gradual investments. Coverage of the major populated areas can be achieved within the first year. To get maximum capacity at low cost, it is worthwhile to customize the design. A generous spectrum allocation also helps. A hybrid fixed cellular and wireline solution may give the least cost overall, fixed cellular being mostly for the rural and suburban areas. Early provision of coverage means that the telephone company can respond to priority needs anywhere and probe the required expansion year by year, instead of forecasting years in advance.
