The definitions, methods of calculation, and thermal effects of stalling, accelerating, and repeated starting of medium and large fabricated squirrel-cage induction machines are discussed. The questions why there may be variations between like machines and why the motor designer and the user/specifier need to have a dialogue relative to an understanding of the application in terms of duty cycle, inertia, system voltage, and the load torque-speed characteristic are discussed.
