We examine fluid mixing dynamics for two-phase immiscible flow in heterogeneous porous media. The discussion centers on the interplay between nonlinearity and stochastically described heterogeneity in determining fluid mixing regimes. Different flow regimes, identified by the asymptotic scaling behavior of the mixing region, are characterized. Such a characterization is an essential step in the formulation of practical mathematical models for groundwater hydrologists and petroleum engineers.
