Polarimetric SAR is increasingly used for oil spill observation.rnIn order to develop reliable methods for oil spillrndetection and characterization, the sensitivity of thesernmeasurements to the imaging geometry, including incidencernangle and look direction relative to the wind, mustrnbe investigated. In this paper, we study the effects ofrnthese parameters on L-band SAR data collected with thernUAVSAR instrument over experimental oil spills. Thernrelative look direction is found to have a larger effectrnon the slick detectability than the incidence angle, andrnthe detectability is better in the downwind direction comparedrnto upwind. The features showing the best slick detectabilityrnin the conditions investigated here are the VVrnintensity, HV intensity, the geometric intensity and thernpolarization difference. The latter feature shows low dependencyrnon imaging geometry.
