In Japan, methods for the evaluation of combined noises emitted by different sound sources arenot yet established. Against such a background, psychological evaluation experiments usingcombined noises were conducted in a simulated environment laboratory. The combined noiseswere composed of road traffic and railway noises. There were two kinds of experiments, onewithout and one with listening disturbance: Experiment-A and Experiment-B, respectively. ForExperiment-A, subjects assessed the combined noise while reading books or magazines. On theother hand, for Experiment-B, subjects assessed the combined noise while watching a movieon DVD. The following results were obtained. 1) For experiment-A there was no differencebetween road traffic noise and conventional railway noise in terms of annoyance. However, theannoyance response to railway noise was higher than that to road traffic noise in Experiment-B.2) Experiment-A shows that conventional railway noise had a depression effect on theannoyance response to road traffic noise. In contrast, the results of Experiment-B showed ahigher annoyance response to road traffic noise with the increase of conventional railway noise.3) The annoyance evaluation of the combined noise was more strongly affected by road trafficnoise than railway noise.
