An examination of the influence of roughness and loudness on annoyance ratings of aircraft noise

The research described is part of a broader investigation into how noise characteristics other than loudness affect people’s responses to aircraft noise. In a previous test with aircraft noise stimuli a saturation effect was observed in the average annoyance ratings when roughness (R5) was increased from 1.48 to 3.69 asper and loudness (N5) was varied from 3.02 to 32.28 sones. Here a second test is described where the loudness levels were reduced in an attempt to avoid this saturation in the ratings. A simulation program based on an Airbus 310 flyover after take-off event was used to generate two sets of 11 stimuli where loudness and roughness were varied but other attributes remained nearly constant. Many of the subjects were sensitive to roughness changes and for most of them increased roughness led to increased annoyance. The Psychoacoustic Annoyance metric was highly correlated to responses. Responses were consistent with those in the earlier roughness test, except that the saturation did not occur.
