Plasma spraying, as an important enabling technology, is being applied to rapid mould manufacturingin order to reduce the development time and manufacturing cost. Thanks to the melting and in-flight states ofpowders are affected directly by plasma jet, which ultimately determines the quality of bulk deposit, there is anincreasing interest in research on the diagnostics and control of plasma spray processing. This paper presents acompact, low-cost and practical method for the real-time diagnosis of plasma jet, which integrates CCD andcomputer imaging technology. The collecting principle and methods were specially investigated, as well asfake-color processing of jet image and jet shape under different process parameters were studied using anexperimental system of real-time data collection by presented method. Current works are of paramountimportance for further study on closed-loop control of plasma spraying processes, which could turn plasmadigitized manufacturing into reality.
