摘要

Energy consumption at Canadian steel foundries is about 4,070 kWh/t, of which 2/3 is electricity. The cost is between 7 and 25 cents a pound in finished castings. The factors affecting electric bills are explained with a view to reducing energy costs, and ultimately allowing foundries to best determine strategies as energy deregulation proceeds in North America. Besides electric melting, energy consumption for lighting, electric motors, air compressors, and gas burners are addressed. Some 24 benchmarks are presented which can be used to compare a foundry's performance with respect to the 16 in the study.
