A framework for investigating universities readiness for on-line learning: With particular reference to Sudanese universities

Conducting on-line learning requires the availability of a number of aspects. These aspects include students' readiness, curricula suitability, technical infrastructure, technical support, financial readiness and teachers' training. In view of these aspects, this study was undertaken to provide a framework for investigating the extent to which universities are ready to conduct on-line learning with especial reference to the Sudanese universities. Results revealed that the Sudanese Universities are not yet ready for on-line learning. This is because: students lack the required characteristics and e-readiness, the current curricula need major deliberate improvements in order to be suitable for on-line learning, and the technical infrastructure is below par, limited and is not utilized properly. There are neither procedures for providing ongoing technical support nor maintenance and there is no money that is particularly allocated for financing the instructional technology. Moreover, the staff training courses are improvised and are only confined to basic computer skills and there is no training in the pedagogical use of technology.
