Research Progress of Monitoring the Urban Expansion Based on RS and GIS

This paper introduces the research progress of monitoring the urban expansion using remote sensing and GIS both at home and abroad in recent years. At the same time, the paper summarizes the remote sensing information characteristic of the urban expansion change and some restricted factors in such aspects as various kinds of remote sensing data source, the methods of data processing, drawing the information from the images and remote sensing application, etc.. We can obtain the data of many sources using the remote sensing and traditional methods to monitor the urban expansion change. Supported by GIS, many source data can be integrated effectively. Which can monitor dynamic change and have a quantitative analysis. It is the best method to monitor dynamic change of the urban expansion at present.
