In this paper we quantified the overall changes in vegetation activity for each year between 2000 and 2005 and examined the proportion linked to differences in phenology and overall photosynthetic activity (Linderman et al. 2005). In addition, we examined the nature of these changes in terms of frequency and duration and identified areas of intensive change. "Hotspots" of interannual change were defined as areas which underwent extreme change. Categorizing the direction and the duration of change between years identifies temporal patterns and measures land degradation processes and ecosystem response to perturbations.
