The seismic design and performance criteria and seismic design aspects of embankment dams have undergone substantial changes in recent years. Today we have a clear concept for the seismic design criteria to be applied when a dam is subjected to strong ground shaking and methods of dynamic analyses have been developed which allow the calculation of the inelastic seismic response of embankment dams. However, earthquakes can cause multiple hazards in large dam projects including ground shaking, fault movements, rockfalls, landslides, landslide dams, liquefaction, water waves in reservoirs etc. The different features of the seismic design and behavior of large embankment dams for hydropower plants including hydro-mechanical and electrical-equipment are discussed. Furthermore, the comprehensive seismic design criteria for dams, which have recently been updated by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), are presented.
