Modern embankment dam filters are designed to control internal erosion in the dam and the foundation. The filters are designed to be no-erosion filters, sealing with no or very minor erosion. Many design methods have been based on the method developed by Sherard and Dunnigan [1989] using extensive laboratory testing reported in Sherard et al [1984]. Foster and Fell [2001] used the original test data reported in these papers and additional laboratory tests to confirm the Sherard and Dunnigan [1989] no-erosion design criteria, and suggest slightly modified criteria for dispersive soils. They also proposed criteria for what they defined as excessive and continuing erosion filters. Filters falling between 'no-erosion' and 'excessive erosion' criteria experience 'some erosion', and will seal with the potential for some damage and a minor to moderate increase in leakage before the filter seals. Those falling between 'excessive erosion' and 'continuing erosion' criteria experience 'excessive erosion' and seal with the potential for large erosion losses in the dam core, and a major increase in seepage before the filter seals. Filters coarser than continuing erosion will not seal.
