On the Loess Plateau region in the Yellow River Valley, the present soil and water conservation checkdam groups mainly composed of individually-built silt retention dams, whcih cannot regulate the flood runoff and silt discharge from the tributary gullies in this area all the way, nor can they optimally utilize the dammed water and deposited fields behind the dams. This paper proposes the design methods and technical schemes of the ASSSRDR (Associated Storage System of Silt Retention Dams and Reservoirs). By integrating the goal of building dams artificially inrelation with with the characteristics of runoff from natural rainfall events , and adopting the principle of "time and space dislocation", this new technique of optimally concentrating and utilizing rain floods in the gullies is capable of separating, storing and exploiting water and silt individually, giving full play to the conceptual function of silt retention dams and reservoirs, and raising the possibilities of dam field utilization, dam water utilization efficiency and ability to arrange water volume in good time. Simultaneously this paper introduces at length the basic composition and functional characteristics of this system and summarizes the main types and key points of design of this system to be built in different orders of tributaries (gullies). At the same time, it proposes that the "construction of small and medium-sized reservoirs in the Loess Plateau region" should be listed in the key construction planning of harnessing and developing the Yellow River Basin.
