Risk management programmes such as Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) deal with failure probabilities, and generate inspection workscopes to mitigate some of the risk (Davies and Lilley). This is achieved by providing information on the presence and stage of advancement of pertinent degradation processes. Reliabilities of inspection techniques in common use are often over-stated, but increasingly the concept of Probability of Detection (POD) for a range of inspection techniques are being applied to link reliability of inspection with requirements of the risk management programme. POD values are frequently derived from round robin exercises and trials, but there are further steps which need to be taken when applying this concept to ensure that differences between trial and site conditions are taken into consideration.
