Finite temperature SU(2) lattice gauge theory is investigated in a box with fixed spatial boundary conditions characterized by given holonomy values. In the first part of the talk we discuss the influence of boundary conditions provided by classical asymptotic BPS monopole fields on the thermodynamic state of the quantum fields. In the second part we search for classical (approximate) solutions of the field equations having non-trivial (physical) holonomy values at the spatial boundary. Among the configurations obtained we see also the dissociated BPS monopole pairs recently discussed by van Baal and collaborators.
