Ground response to Earth Pressure Balance Shield Tunnelling has been measured and investigated for the twin bored tunnels of the contract C705 of Singapore MRT, North East Line. At depth the geology comprised Old Alluvium overlain by soft deposits of the Kallang Formation. Detailed measurements at the ground surface show the response of the ground as the tunnel face passed. This paper investigates the relationship between face pressure, stability and volume loss for the different soil types encountered. The stability of the tunnel face and related surface settlements were found to be consistent with estimates from simple predictive techniques.
