Abstract: Variational approach is adopted to study the evolutionof an ultrashort laser pulse copropagating with anelectron plasma wave. By use of the potential welldescription, the conditions for pulse compression,decompression or stationary state are found, which areresults of the competitions between the dispersivediffusion and phase modulation of the pulse by theplasma wave. Results are compared with the numericalcalculations of the evolution equation to prove theapplicability of the above approximate method.!13
