Today's multistage restraint systems offer different system responses depending on the variables of the accident severity and the occupants. Considering what happens in an accident and the results of crash tests, it is seen that controlling the restraint systems, so they adapt to the specifics of the occupants and the accident itself, promises even more potential for reducing the loads on occupants. This paper discusses the desirable adaptability and the resulting possible sensor strategy. An airbag control concept is presented that makes it possible to achieve the adaptability and to optimize the load on the occupants. The way in which the system functions and its potential have been demonstrated using a computer-aided influence analysis.
