The characteristics of the air barrier for the inclined front panel type of BSC

Recently, the inclined front panel type of Class II biosafety cabinet (BSC) is getting popular for the operator's head space. An air barrier at the work access opening, which is made from airflow balance is most important in order to prevent hazardous agents from escaping to outside. On the inclined front panel type of BSC, the area of the work surface is larger than the area of the supply air outlet. Therefore, the air barrier of the front opening becomes weak, due to turbulent flow inside of the front panel. In Japan, JIS K3800-2000 requires more sever biological challenge tests compared to NSF No.49-2002e standard (USA). Therefore, the inclined front panel type of BSC by complied to JIS has been approved. Recently we have redeveloped the inclined front panel type, which was certified with JIS K3800-2000 standard. And we researched airflow of the front opening, and made sure the performance of the air barrier. Further more we developed new DC brush-less motor/fan system which can maintain constant air volume against filter clogging. In this paper, we will mainly report the difference between current JIS and current NSF standard and the general characteristics of the air barrier on the inclined type of BSC and the performance of the new DCBL motor/fan system.
