This paper briefly summarizes the development of a physical retrieval method for water surface skin temperature (WST) from environmental scanning IR spectrometers. The methodology relies on forward calculations derived from fast transmittance models, along with improved modeling of the surface radiative properties. The surface reflection is specified using a new quasi-specular reflection model. Modeling calculations derived from global maritime profiles demonstrate the robustness of the retrieval in terms of scatter and moisture-dependent bias. Application of the method to microwindow radiance spectra measured by the NPOESS Airborne Sounder Testbed-Interferometer (NAST-I) from the NASA ER-2 demonstrates the practical utility of the approach for obtaining accurate fields of WST with high spatial resolution.
