In this work, a 900MHz low-voltage, low-power voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) for short-range wireless ad-hoc network applications is presented. Based on the relaxation oscillator topology, the VCO has been fabricated in a standard commercial 0.18μm six metal CMOS process. Frequency tuning is provided by varactors, permitting use of a constant supply current Measurements show that the VCO is capable of operation at a supply voltage of 1.0V with a core current of 75 μA, resulting in an ultralow power consumption of only 75 μW. For a tuning range of 4.2%, phase noise performance of -83dBc/Hz at an offset of 1MHz from the carrier is observed.
