The paper summarizes the major mechanisms responsibie for the degradation of electrical connectors in transmission and distribution systems. A simple model of an electrical contact is described, that reproduces the degradation pattern of connector. From this model, the paper illustrates the importance of detecting the early stages of connector degradation to prevent catastrophic failure of electrical connections. The paper reviews results of recent "live-line" resistance measurements on high-power connectors and summarizes current observations of the impact of connector design on connector service performance in distribution networks. The limitations of infrared thermography for detecting connector degradation are summarized. Finally, the paper addresses the consequence of connector degradation on the operating cost of a power line.
