Today and in the future, the designer needs to think carefully about his decisions in regard to Rg. The traded offs are higher efficiency, lower ILoop, faster turn-on, easier layout, fewer parts, and smaller circuit size versus MOSFET protection. For each design there is an optimum Rg, one that will give the designer the best efficiency possible, while at the same time providing protection to the MOSFET, or in the case of the Buck converter, both MOSFETS. Finding it is worth the effort!
