An Application of PVM in Parallel Computing

In this paper, we discuss some characteristics of a software tool called Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and several parallel programming paradigms supported by PVM. An example is given and implemented under the network of workstations (NOWs) as a parallel virtual machine. Two different approaches are discussed in detail for the example, one using the crowd computing model and the other using the tree computing model. Efficiencies of the two approaches are analyzed and compared schematically. We also discuss issues relating to optimal task parallelization and optimal PVM configuration using a NOWs to achieve better efficiency.
