Systematic Approach to Training for Competence Building in Radiation Safety

Competence building involves four main attributes, namely, knowledge, skills, operating experiencernand attitude to radiation safety. These multi-attribute requirements demand a systematic approach to educationrnand training of regulatory staff, licensees/registrants and service providers to ensure commensurate competencernin performance of responsibilities and duties to specified standards. In order to address issues of competenciesrnrequired in radiation safety a national programme for qualification and certification has been initiated forrnregulatory staff, operators, radiation safety officers and qualified experts. Since the inception of this programmernin 1993, 40 training events have been organized involving 423 individuals. This programme is at various levelsrnof implementation due to financial and human resource constraints. A department for Human ResourcernDevelopment and Research was established in 2000 to enhance and ensure the sustainability of the effectivenessrnof capacity building in radiation safety.
