OUTSIDE-IN DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAM

Traditionally, technical skill training programs are heavily relied on the instructor's background, knowledge and experience to pass on technical know-how and good practices to the students to satisfy the needs of industry. Modem industry has an evolving skill set requirement for engineering graduates to meet the fast rate of technical development and change. Universities are wrangling to develop new advance training programs to meet the industry's expectation against the continuous financial cutback from government to purchase advance equipment, set up sufficient training stations for effective training and development of staff's knowledge and expertise on advance technology. This paper presents and discusses the method approaches that have been taken by the Industrial Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to develop advance training programs in collaboration with the industries. Such collaborations have eased off the cost burden of expensive equipment and technology facilities for continuous enhancement of the training content. Most importantly, it helps to prepare graduates entering the industries with confidence and competence; and to make them immediately productive in their technological capacity.
