Low-temperature chlorination by the use of molybdenum pentachloride has been proposed for reducing the corrosion of container material. To certify its applicability, chlorination of lanthanide oxides (lanthanum oxide or neodymium oxide) was first examined at or below 500℃. The chlorination ratio was measured by chemical analysis, and the products were identified by powder X-ray diffraction. This indicated that substitution of molybdenum pentachloride for chlorine gas significantly reduces the reaction temperature. Almost 100% of the lanthanide oxide was converted to chloride, for instance, even at 220℃for 30 minutes when the mole ratio of molybdenum pentachloride to lanthanide oxide exceeded 1.5.
