The use of ''molecular precursors'' in low temperature routes to high temperature materials has achieved great success in ceramic processing. The thermal and hydrolytic decomposition products of metal alkoxides has become a favored route to high purity ceramics. This procedure limits impurities in the system and it gives a high surface area precursor for lower temperature sintering. The synthesis of Mo sub 2 O sub 3 has been attempted via similar routes, using the controlled hydrolysis of appropriate labile molybdenum compounds. Mo sub 2 (OPr/sup i/) sub 6 and Mo sub 2 (NMe sub 2 ) sub 6 were selected as starting materials. (ERA citation 12:043589)
