This paper describes an application of the engine cycle simulation code Ricardo WAVE and dynamic systems and control modelling package Matlab Simulink. The numerical solvers from both software packages are coupled during execution to provide representations of total vehicle systems (i.e. enging, engine electronic control unit (ECU) and vehicle dynamics). The aim of the CAE model is to allow calibration of the Engine Management ECU using CAE as a direct replacement for hardware testing i.e. 'Analytical' Calibration. The accuracy of prediction demonstrated by two application examples on a medium capacity high speed direct injection diesel (HSDI) engine in passenger car usage is shown to be of an adequate standard for this purpose.
