Creamy white powders were obtained by the chemical vapor deposition of carbon tetrachloride and ammonia at1000°C, followed by washing with boiled water. The composition of the material was C_3N_(5.1)O_(0.4)H_(4.0), which wasdetermined by usual combustion method and was similar to that of hypothetical hard material C3N4. The powderswere harder than quartz whose Mohs hardness is 7, but were not as hard as sapphire (Mohs hardness:8). Thehardness could be explained by the C-N single bond observed in the ESCA C_(1s) spectrum.
