Over many years the stability of vehicles during braking has been the subject of numerous experimental and theoretical investigations. However, it is not entirely clear what is meant by the concept of stability under this condition. By the widely used classical definitions of Liapunov and Malkin nearly all motions that take place over a finite time are stable. More useful here is the concept of practical stability, which is concerned with a limited growth of perturbations that can be expected to be present in a system under consideration. An application of this concept to the stability of a motorcycle during braking is presented.
