Concrete has an extremely wide range of applications. China is experiencing an increased demand for high-quality concrete components and structures made of concrete. The SMT Transrapid Shanghai is an example of modern transportation technology on an innovative road surface made of concrete. Self-compacting concrete, underwater concrete and self-compacting concrete for engineering structures, in addition to high performance and ultra high performance concrete and self-curing concrete are all under discussion. In all of these cases, concrete additives and admixtures, in particular superplasticizers, play an extremely important role. They are necessary for the optimization of the working properties and the properties of the hardened concrete.
